Year 4 Gallery & Work 21/22

During summer term, Year 4 are learning about Islam during RE. This week we have learnt the main beliefs that are held by Muslims including the five pillars of Islam.

Isobelle- “In RE we have learned about different beliefs and the five pillars of Islam.”

Olivia- “In RE we learned about Islam and we wrote on pillars about Allah and his friends.”

This week we have begun looking at addition and subtraction for the second time this year. We are using our prior knowledge of column addition and column subtraction to calculate and solve problems using two or more 4-digit numbers.

Levi - “I really enjoyed using the column method for addition and subtraction because I liked the strategy of it.”

In history this week we have continued to look at our topic of the Ancient Egyptians. The focus of this lesson was to identify different Egyptian artefacts and their purpose. We looked at why these artefacts were so important and we were introduced to lots of new key vocabulary such as Canopic jars.

John- “I really enjoyed learning about the artefacts. Especially the Giza pyramid.”

During summer term our focus in RE will be on Islam. We were introduced to this by completing a reading comprehension and then creating a jigsaw to resemble the country in which Islam was founded.

“We started looking at the religion of Islam. I enjoyed when we found out where Islam was found and then put together a map using jigsaw pieces of this country”- Levi.

This term we have started our new topic of Ancient Egyptians. The first lesson was to locate Egypt on a world map and then create a fact file about it.

“I enjoyed trying to find on the world map. We used an atlas to find it.” – Olivia.

In science we have begun looking at our new topic of animals including humans. Our first lesson was the human digestive system. In small groups, we cut out the digestive system and reassembled it. We then looked at the function of each organ and the important part it plays.

“I enjoyed the cutting and sticking and working in a team to put together the digestive system”- Jack.

In the build up to Easter, we have been hard at work with our Easter crafts. We have been learning how to weave using paper to create a basket for our cards. We also had a fantastic visit from the team from Youth for Christ. We learnt all about the Easter story and had some important discussions about what we value in friendship.

Levi said “I enjoyed learning about the last supper and asking questions about the Easter story.”

Joshua said “My favourite activity was making a person and a little friend out of pipe cleaners.”

In Maths, we have been learning all about money. We have learnt how to estimate amounts of money by rounding to the nearest pound and how to use addition and subtraction to find change.

This week in English, we have been writing a chapter of the story ‘The Journey to The Centre of The Earth’. We have been working hard to use exciting vocabulary and use a range of conjunctions to extend our sentences.

In year 4, we have been looking at coding in computing. We start by watching a short clip which explains each task before following different codes we are set in order to complete the different tasks. Some of the tasks include: making a car move along a track, creating a song with different instruments and creating a firework display.  

Our school focus for science week was all about climate change. In year 4, we were looking at the big question ‘how can what we eat impact climate change’. To investigate this we created bar charts to see which foods out of the different food groups had least impact on the environment. We then took that information and created our own plate of food before creating posters.

In art we have been focusing on our topic of volcanoes. Firstly, we designed the volcanoes on paper and made a list of all the resources and materials we would need to make them. We then moved on using clay to make and sculpt the structure. The final step this week will be painting the volcanoes.

In geography this week we have been looking at earthquakes. We have learned about what an earthquake is and what causes them. We have also learned about how earthquakes are measured.

In maths this week we have been learning about decimal numbers. We have been looking at how tenths as fractions can be represented by decimals. We looked more closely at recognising tenths as decimals on a place value grid and tenths as decimals on a number line.

In Spanish this week we have continued to look at colours. The children were identifying how to say colours in Spanish before recognising how they are written. We then completed a worksheet requiring the children to read and recognise the colours in Spanish and colour the paint splat in accordingly.

In Art, we completed our Volcano artwork. We took inspiration from Andy Warhol to create these oil pastel pictures of Mount Vesuvius.

In Science, we completed an investigation to help Willy Wonka discover the best way to melt chocolate. We used four different methods and also measured the temperature of the chocolate once it had melted.

For children’s mental health week, Year 4 discussed the theme ‘Growing Together’ and set ourselves goals for emotional growth. We also created a support balloon to identify the people who can support us to reach our goals.

In RRSA this week we have been focusing on article 7 and 8 which are all about a child’s right to their identity. For this we asked the children to draw a self-portrait on a background of jigsaw pieces. We then gave them another piece of paper to write six things that make up their identity. The end product is a self- portrait on the front and as you lift each piece up it reveals an aspect of their identity.

In computing, we have been using our coding skills to create and debug programmes on Purple Mash. We had to follow a set of instructions to successfully complete each challenge.

In art we have oil pastels to colour our sketches of Mount Vesuvius in the style of Andy Warhol. We chose colours for each picture to replicate the different stages of an eruption.

During Science this week, we have been looking at how to measure temperate in degrees Celcius. We estimated the temperature of different liquids and places and used thermometers to find out the actual temperature.

We have begun a new art project linked to volcanoes and earthquakes and have taken inspiration from Andy Warhol. We practised our sketching techniques by drawing lines to create a volcano scene and in the coming lessons we will be using oil pastels to represent the different stages of a volcanic eruption.

In English, we have been learning to include powerful vocabulary and how to structure sentences in different ways and have written some fantastic descriptions of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

In year 4, our new topic for Spring term is volcanoes and earthquakes. During afternoon sessions, we have been learning about the key features of a volcano and we created a timeline of events for the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

This week in year 4, we have been hard at work with our Christmas crafts. We have enjoyed learning how to create pom poms to make reindeer baubles and making gift tags. We have also started to create our Christmas cards and have learned about different pivots and linkages that we can incorporate into our design.

In this week’s maths lessons, we have started our new topic of area and perimeter. We have been counting squares to find the area of different rectilinear shapes and drawing some of our own shapes that have a given area. We have also enjoyed solving some tricky problems.

In English, we have begun drafting our non-chronological reports all about Roman life. We have been using subheadings to organise our information and have been including a range of different conjunctions to extend our sentences.

In maths this week we have begun looking at our new topic of multiplication. We have started to look at factor bugs and finding factor pairs of numbers.

We continued to focus on the Romans this week for art, looking closely at a famous Roman landmark, the Colosseum. The children began by reading and researching about the Colosseum and finding out lots of facts about it before creating their own pop up card. They then used the knowledge they gathered from their research to write interesting facts on their pop up card.

In Year 4 this week we have been looking at Electricity in science. We have been constructing simple circuits using wires, bulbs and cells and understanding what makes a circuit complete and incomplete. After doing this, we began adding different elements into the circuit such as a buzzer and a motor. We then looked at drawing and labelling these circuits in our books using the correct scientific symbols and vocabulary.

For our art lesson this week we were looking at the artist John Constable. We focused on sketching pictures of Hadrian’s Wall in the style of his work. The children then enjoyed painting them using watercolours.

In topic this week we have been continuing to look at the Romans in history. This week we have focused on Queen Boudicca and have completed some research into who she was and why she was important during the Roman era. After doing this research, the children completed a wanted poster on her.

In year 4 this week we have been completing different activities for anti-bullying week. The children have been taking part in kindness bingo. In each box on their sheet they had to write a kind act they could complete this week in school and how they could be kind to someone in school. When they complete this, the children can tick it off. We have been looking for children with complete bingo cards to win prizes.

In PSHE, we have focused on recognising different feelings and emotions and strategies for dealing with these. It was a good opportunity for us to discuss our own feelings and emotions and how these can change over time.

In maths, we have been looking at written methods for subtracting 4-digit numbers and have solved some tricky problems.

This week in year 4 we have been linking local history to the Romans by studying Hadrian’s Wall. We  began by sketching Hadrian’s Wall in the Style of artist John Constable.  We have also located Hadrian’s wall on a map and found out some interesting facts about why it was built.

In P.E. we have been learning how to play hockey. We began by looking at how to correctly hold a hockey stick and by discussing the rules of the sport. We practised how to control the ball by dribbling around different areas of the sports hall. After this, the children had lots of fun playing a race game at the end which focused around dribbling.

This week in Year 4, we have been continuing to learn about the Romans. We have been looking at the armour the Roman’s wore and have had lots of fun designing our own helmet.

In history, we have been looking at what life was like for a Roman solider. We found out what was required of men, who applied for the job. We produced some fantastic Roman solider job adverts.

This week we have been working hard to write our diary entries as a Roman solider. We have been working on, including powerful vocabulary in our writing and thinking about how a Roman solider would have felt on their journey into battle.

In English, we have been working very hard since returning to school to take on the role of a Roman solider. We have been identifying features of a diary and discovering what life was like for a Roman soldier. We have been working especially hard to include adjectives and are looking forward to drafting our first piece of writing.

In maths, we have been learning about the place value of numbers and how to round numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. We have been using our reasoning skills and applying our knowledge to solve some tricky problems.

As part of our PSHE topic, we have been discussing what makes a great friend and how important friendship can be. We have also been looking at strategies to handle conflict and we had some brilliant discussions about how to resolve disagreements.
